ART DIRECTOR

Title: Capturing Old Money Opulence in THE GREAT GATSBY.

THE GREAT GATSBY is a novel that has captured the hearts of many readers over the years, with its tale of love, wealth, and excess in the 1920s. One of the most notable elements of the story is the contrast between old money and new money, and this is brought to life in the setting of Buchanan's Mansion.

As the Art Director for the film adaptation of THE GREAT GATSBY it was my job to capture the spirit of East Egg old money in the design of Buchanan's Salon and Mansion. The mansion was a study in Georgian opulence, with a level of detail that was meant to stand in stark contrast to the new money types over in West Egg, such as the character of Gatsby himself.

The detailing of the mansion was heavily influenced by Georgian style, but also included French elements that were very popular during the time period. This can be seen in the side table legs, the small pilasters on the bar, and the beautiful basket chandelier. The oval room plan was an interesting direction from Baz, adding a unique touch to the overall design of the space.

Working with CM, Baz, and the team is always incredible. We were all committed to creating a space that would transport the audience back in time and capture the opulence and grandeur of the era. Buchanan's Mansion was a key element of this effort, and I am proud of the work we accomplished.

At the end of the scene Daisy famously whispers, "Gatsby? Which Gatsby?"
